POLYETHER-IMIDE FOAMING PRECURSOR, FOAM HAVING IMPROVED PHYSICAL PROPERTIES, AND MANUFACTURE THEREOF

PURPOSE: To provide a polyetherimide foam precursor and soft polyetherimide foam having improved specific tensile strength at both high and cryogenic temps., resistance to high temp. and flame, low density and flexibility. ;CONSTITUTION: 4,4'-Oxydiphthalic anhydride(ODPA) is reacted with an alcohol to form a diester which is, in turn, reacted with a polyamine being a proper monomer, for example, m-phenylendiamine to produce a precursor. This material is dried to obtain a solid block or a powder. If this block or powder is heated, foaming is generated and fine foam white fragile lumps are generated.
