PURPOSE: To provide an improved process for pre-purification of air prior to introducing the air to a cryogenic air separation unit. CONSTITUTION: The water vapor and carbon dioxide are substantially removed from air by a pressure-swing-adsorption process(PSA) with adsorbents comprising a first layer of an active alumina holding about 70-100 volume % of an adsorbent layer, and a second layer holding remaining part comprising a proper zelite layer (when existing). The adsorbent particles (especially zeolite) have a diameter of =2 mm. The invented PSA cycle is especially suitable for using such fine particles of the adsorbent.
