PURPOSE:To obtain the intermetallic compound of Ti and Al at high purity by pulverizing a Ti oxide and an Al oxide, executing mixing, allowing Ca to act on the above mixed powder to reduce it and thereafter removing by- products by a solvent. CONSTITUTION:In a primary stage, titanium and aluminum atoms in mixed titanium dioxide (TiO2) and aluminum oxide (Al2O3) are pulverized as fine as possible and are uniformly mixed. In a secondary stage, this oxide mixture is reduced by acting calcium or calcium hydride thereon at a high temp. in the temp. range of 1023 to 1473K (750 to 1200 deg.C). In this reducing stage, oxygen bonded with titanium and aluminum atoms is cut off by Ca, and simultaneously, the bond of Ti and Al is promoted. As a result, powdery intermetallic compound Al3Ti is synthesized together with calcium oxide and a Ca-Al allay. The CaO and Ca-Al allay by-produced in the third stage are melted away by a solvent such as water, an acid water soln. and ammonium chloride. Only the intermetallic compound Al3Ti is purely taken out.
