PRODUCTION OF HYBRID ORYZA SATIVA USING PERENNIAL MALE STERILE GRASS

PURPOSE: To provide an improved process for producing hybrid rice of first filial generation which may be cost effectively executed on a commercial scale. CONSTITUTION: The annual male fertile F1 hybrid Oryza sativa plants are formed by (a) (i) growing one group of perennial female fertile and made sterile rice plants and (ii) one group of annual female fertile and male fertile rice plants in media, (b) pollinating the group (i) with the pollens of the group (ii) to have the seeds capable of forming the annual male fertile F1 hybrid Oryza sativa plants formed by the plants of the group (i), (c) harvesting the seeds formed in these plants, (d) maintaining the plants of the group (i) during the next winter or cold season under conditions under which there is substantially no irrigation water, exposing the plants of the group (ii) under the conditions described above to kill the plants, (e) planting the annual female fertile and male fertile rice plants of the additional group (ii) during the next growth period in these media and (f) pollinating the plants of the surviving (i) group with the pollens of the group (ii) to have the seeds formed by the plants of the group (i).
