PURPOSE:To provide the subject drug for protection of infection and the subject functional food respectively capable of giving an excellent macrophage-activation effect and an excellent immunological recovery effect and capable of improving protecting ability of a living body against infection of pathogenic fungi, virus, etc. CONSTITUTION:The underground stem of a plant such as Chinese yam belonging to Dioscorea genus, Dioscoreaceae family is subjected to fermentation treatment by using a microorganism such as Bacillus subtilis or its relatives, thus obtaining the objective drug for protection of infection, containing a fraction having 1000-200000 molecular weight among water soluble fractions as the active component and the objective functional food containing the above-mentioned active component and having the infection-protecting effect.
