PURPOSE:To economically melt a large quantity of scrap at a low cost to execute steelmaking by treating Cu and Sn-containing scrap with mixed material of soda ash and iron sulfide at the specific temp., charging it into a converter after removing Cu and Sn and executing refining. CONSTITUTION:The scrap containing Cu and Sn is charged into a molten metal treating furnace held to 600-1000 deg.C and brought into contact with the mixed material of soda ash and iron sulfide containing =40wt.% S. Blending ratio of the soda ash in the above mixed material is suitably about 15-40%. Further, as energy source for forming this molten mixed material, by-product gas essentially containing CO at the time of refining it in the converter, is desirably used. The above molten metal treating furnace is lined with refractory of one or more kinds of magnesia series (MgO95%), alumina series (Al2O380%), graphite-alumina series (60-90% C and 10-40% Al2O3) and graphite-magnesia series (3-20% C and 80-97% MgO). By the above treatment, the scrap, from which Cu and Sn are removed, is charged into the converter under preheating condition, and the refining is executed to produce the steel.
