PURPOSE:To produce the RFe2 extremely magnetostrictive material without wasting a power by continuously charging the raw alloy, etc., kept at a specified temp. into a casting mold in specified amts. melting the raw alloy, etc., and then gradually solidifying the molten material. CONSTITUTION:A powdery raw alloy 1 expressed by R(Fe1-nTx)n (n=0 to 0.4, x=1 to 3, R is Tb, Dy, etc., and T is Co, Ni, etc.) is charged into a hopper 10. A housing 31 is then evacuated to a high vacuum and filled with an Ar atmosphere, and the alloy 1 in the hopper 10 is continuously charged into a casting mold 30 in specified amts. by the rotation of a rotary valve 22. A high- frequency current is applied to a coil 41 set at the lowermost position of the mold 30 to melt the alloy 1 in a short time, and a melt zone 2 is formed. A heater 40 is gradually raised by a motor 50, hence the coil 41 is also raised, and the melt zone 2 at the bottom of the mold 30 is gradually transformed into a solidified zone 3 by a water-cooled plate 60. Consequently, an RFe2 extremely magnetostrictive material is produced without wasting a power.
