LIVING POLYMER OF GLYCIDYL METHACRYLATE AND ITS PREPARATION

PURPOSE:To prepare a poly(glycidyl methacrylate) having a narrow mol.wt. distribution at a high yield by anionically polymerizing glycidyl methacrylate in the presence of a polymn. initiator contg. cumylpotassium and 1,1- diphenylethylene. CONSTITUTION:Glycidyl methacrylate is anionically polymerized in the presence of a polymn. initiator contg. cumylpotassium, 1,1-diphenylethylene, and, if necessary, tert.-butoxypotassium to give a living polymer, which has repeating units of the formula, a number-average mol.wt. (Mn) of 500-500000, and a ratio of the wt.-average (Mw) to the number-average mol.wt. of 1.30 or lower and is suitably used in areas of a self-adhesive, an adhesive, a coating materal, etc. The polymer, having a narrow mol.wt. distribution, has an easily controllable viscosity and improved moldability and processability.
