PURPOSE:To eliminate variations in measuring temperatures by a method wherein expired air is detected by a mouth opening/closing detection means to detect the opening or closing of a mouth and the operation of measuring temperature is simplified with automation of the start of starting the measurement of temperature while time-lag is eliminated in the starting of measuring temperature. CONSTITUTION:Before a measurement, with a mouth closed, air is sucked through a nose to stop respiration for several seconds while a thermometer is brought close to the mouth and a power source 1 is turned ON to ascertain that a READY display lamp 5 is lit. After the positioning of the mouth observing a sight 7, the mouth is opened to expire air slowly. When the expired air is detected with a mouth opening/closing detection means 10, the opening or closing of the mouth is detected to start the measurement of temperature with an infrared sensor 9. While expiring air, a display section 4 shows a temperature detection value in a Peak-Hold value. Then, as the air expired from the mouth decreases to a certain extent, the mouth opening/closing detection means 10 detects the exhaust running out. After the passage of a specified time following the detection, the measurement of temperature with the infrared sensor 9 ends.
