PURPOSE:To automatically remove a contaminant from an insulator incapable of being washed heretofore without using labor such as a large insulator in a live wire state by coating the surface of the insulator with a contaminant removing agent by the washing apparatus self-propelled on the insulator and spraying water or compressed air to the insulator by said apparatus to blow off the contaminant. CONSTITUTION:Two sets of roller groups 3, 4 are provided to the inside of a frame 2 having a diameter larger than that of an insulator 1 and, in such a state that one roller group 3 is engaged with the cap of the insulator 1, the other roller group 4 is moved up and down and the moved roller group 4 is engaged with the cap to move the frame 2 on the insulator 1. A contaminant removing agent is applied to the insulator 1 from the nozzle 12 provided to the frame 2 and the insulator 1 is brushed with a brush 13 and, further, water is sprayed to the insulator from a nozzle 14 to remove a contaminant. As a result, the contaminant can be automatically removed from an insulator incapable of being washed heretofore without using labor like a large insulator in a live wire state.
