OUTBOARD MOTOR AND CLUTCH MECHANISM IN PROPELLER SHAFT OF INBOARD AND OUTBOARD MOTORS

PURPOSE:To smoothly conduct the shift operation and to prolong the life of a clutch mechanism by providing a cone clutch which can be selectively engaged and disengaged with and from a normal rotating bevel gear and a reversing bevel gear by a shift mechanism on a propeller shaft supported on a lower gear housing. CONSTITUTION:When a shift rod 12 is operated from the condition where a cone clutch 9 is in the neutral state to apply the counterclockwise force on a shifter 13, the cone clutch 9 is turned advanced little by little along a multiple thread 83 of a reversible transmission shaft 81 by a cross pin 11, and as the frictional cone surface 93 is engaged with the frictional cone surface 11 of a normal rotating bevel gear 1, a propeller shaft 8 is rotated in the normal direction by the turning power transmitted to a drive shaft 5. On the contrary, when the shifter 13 is operated in the reverse direction, the cone clutch 9 is moved backward along the multiple thread 83 and the frictional cone surface 93 is engaged with the frictional cone surface 141 of a reversing bevel gear 14 to rotate the propeller shaft 8 in the reverse direction.
