PURPOSE: To efficiently reduce CO, NOx or the like by bringing burnt products in an exhaust gas from an engine into contact with a catalyst in which fine palladium particulates are substantially dispersed on a carrier of platinum or platinum and alumina groups. CONSTITUTION: The burnt products in an exhaust gas from a methane fueled automobile engine is brought into contact with a catalyst in which fine palladium particulates are carried dispersedly on a carrier of platinum or platinum and alumina groups. In this case, the composition of methane containing fuel-air mixture that is fed to the fuel chamber of the engine is controlled within the value containing the stoichiometric amount of mixture and the fuel-rich side mixture. As the results, CH3 , CH, CO and NOx in the exhaust gas can be reduced efficiently. Said catalyst are preferably such that 2-3 parts of platinum and 1 part of fine palladium are carried on a carrier based on alumina.
