A resident work area increasing means 4 increases the number of work areas by the prescribed value and resets the value of an accumulating counter 3 to 0 when this counter 3 reaches the fixed value. Meanwhile a resident work area decreasing means 5 checks the areas 6A - 6N at each fixed time. Then the means 5 erases the display of application if given to a control area for the work areas and then releases the work areas by means of the memory control mechanism of the OS 7 when no display of application is confirmed. Thus it is possible to secure and release the work areas at high speed.
