PURPOSE:To provide the subject carrier composed of a number of highly water- absorbing resin members dispersed in a gas-transmissible foamed urethane structural material, capable of sufficiently exhibiting the catalytic function in gaseous phase as well as in aqueous phase and useful for the cleaning of gas, etc. CONSTITUTION:The objective carrier 1 is composed of a gas-transmissible foamed urethane structural material 11 and a number of highly water-absorbing resin members 12 dispersed in the gas-transmissible foamed urethane structural material 11 and has a gas-transmissible structure as a whole. Preferably, the carrier is produced by dispersing the highly water-absorbing resin members in dried or water-absorbed state into a urethane prepolymer or coating the surface of the resin member with a urethane prepolymer, polymerizing the prepolymer and foaming the product. Preferably, the carrier is immersed in a culture liquid containing a biocatalyst component to immobilize the biocatalyst component on the surface of the carrier and the highly water-absorbing resin member is soaked with water to obtain an immobilized biocatalyst.
