NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula I or formula II. USE:Treating agent for neuropathy. PREPARATION:The compound of formula I and formula II can be produced e.g. by reacting D-mannose with oxaloacetic acid in the presence of sodium carbonate, acetylating with acetic anhydride in the presence of pyridine, protecting the hydroxyl group with benzyl bromide in the presence of cesium carbonate to obtain a compound of formula III (Ac is acetyl; Bn is benzyl), brominating the 1-site of the product with titanium tetrabromide, reacting with cholesterol in the presence of silver trifluoromethylsulfonate, subjecting the reaction product to silica gel chromatography to separate the alpha-isomer and the beta-isomer and hydrolyzing the isomers with 1N aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide.
