PURPOSE:To reproduce even a retromammospace as an image suitable for diagnosis by finding a picture element point separate from the point of the center of gravity of an image in the direction opposite to a boundary point, and finding reading conditions and image processing conditions according to image signals corresponding to an area surrounded by the boundary point and the picture element point. CONSTITUTION:The point D of the center of gravity of an initially read image signal SP corresponding to a number of picture elements each of which locates on a straight line connecting a boundary point A or AO and the middle point Ca of a side edge 11a is found. A picture element point E separate from the point D of the center of gravity in the direction of the middle point Ca by a distance b=a/eta obtained by multiplication of the distance (a) between the boundary point A or AO and the point D of the center of gravity by a predetermined factor eta is found.
