PURPOSE:To make an Al base composite high strength by using alumina-boria whisker as strengthening material and Mg-containing Al alloy or pure Al as matrix. CONSTITUTION:The alumina-boria whisker 10 is charged into distilled water 12, and after stirring with propellers 14, this is shifted into a forming jig and compacted. The obtd. formed body is charged into a freezing chamber. Water in the formed body is frozen. This formed body 20 is packed into a case 18 made of stainless steel, etc., and heated together with the case 18 to dry the formed body. The formed body 20 is set in a mold 24 in a high pressure casting device 22 together with the case 18. Into the mold 24, molten metal 26 of the Al alloy containing 0.75wt.% Mg or the pure Al, is poured and pressurized with a plunger 28 and solidified. As necessary, the obtd. composite is heat treated. By this method, reaction between B2O3 in the whisker and Mg in the matrix, is reduced, and the development of spinel layer and lowering of strength of the whisker are restrained.
