PURPOSE: To provide a prism for guiding light wave into an optical waveguide and a prism for guiding a portion of the light wave outside the optical waveguide and measure accurately the transmission loss of the optical waveguide by adjusting a distance between both prisms. CONSTITUTION: Incident beams from a light wave source 4 pass through a beam splitter 5. One of the incident beams enters a sensor 6 for detecting reference light wave power Pr. The other enters a prism 11 and propagates in an optical waveguide 13 and exits the rear end face thereof so that the power P30 of the light wave is detected by a sensor 14. Thereafter, a combination prism 15 is combined with the waveguide 13. A part of the light wave propagates in the waveguide 13 reaches a sensor 18 for detecting the power P2 of the light wave from the prism 15. A part of the light wave reaches the sensor 14 through the wave guide 13 and the power of the light wave is reduced from P30 to P3. The sensors 6, 14, 18 are combined with a power meter 19 combined with a computer 20 for calculating and recording detecting data. A distance between the prism 11 and prism 15 is changed by a micrometer 21 to obtain the loss of light power propagating in different light path length of the waveguide 13.
