PURPOSE: To detect the subject toxic composition in high sensitivity without using chemical analysis by monitoring living cells such as microorganisms sensitive to toxic composition in water by controlling the metabolic parameters in the presence or absence of the toxic composition. ;CONSTITUTION: The amount of a toxic composition containing phenol, etc., in water is detected in high sensitivity by culturing living cells of e.g. microorganisms sensitive to the toxic composition [e.g. yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae KL144A)] in the presence or absence of said toxic component and measuring the pH of the medium containing the microorganism by a potentiometer with time in a controlled state in a reaction cell regulated with a thermostat, etc., to determine the formation of carbon dioxide in the medium with time as a parameter of metabolism.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1992,JPO
