PURPOSE:To manufacture an Al3Ti reinforced Al composite having homogeneity and high strength by preheating a TiO2 whisker green compact having a specified remaining amt. of K and contg. anatase crystals to a specified temp. and permeating the molten metal of Al or an Al alloy therein. CONSTITUTION:A material is subjected to depotassiumization treatment by an acid water soln. and is thereafter heat-treated to obtain TiO2 whiskers having 1 to 5wt.% remaining amt. of K and contg. anatase crystals. This TiO2 whiskers are subjected to compacting to form a green compact. This fibrous green compact 16 is preheated to 760 to 920 deg.C and is arranged in a mold 24 of a high pressure casting apparatus 22. Next, the molten metal 26 of pure Al or an Al alloy is fed thereto, and pressurizing is executed by a plunger 28 to permeate the molten metal 26 into the above green compact 16. The anatase crystals in the above whiskers are brought into reaction with Al in the molten metal 26 to form fine Al3Ti and Al2O3. In this way, the Al3Ti and Al2O3 are uniformly dispersed into the Al or Al alloy matrix with tight adhesion, by which the composite having high strength can be obtd.
