PURPOSE:To obtain the composite membrane which obviates blood plasma leakage and maintains a sufficient gas exchangeability during use over a long period of time and has an excellent antithrhombotic property by packing the fine particles which has the higher hydrophilicity than the hydrophilicity of a hydrophobic porous membrane, the high affinity to a bio-compatibility-polymer to be coated and the grain size smaller than an average pore size into the pores and coating the same with the bio-compatibility-polymer. CONSTITUTION:The dispersion of the fine particles is admitted into the module of the artificial lung from an introducing port 13 or leading out port 14 for the 1st material transfer fluid thereof or an inlet 28 or outlet 29 for the 2nd material transfer fluid and the dispersion medium is filtered by a gas exchange membrane 2, by which the fine particles are packed into the pores of the hydrophobic porous membrane, i.e. the gas exchange membrane. After the dispersion medium is filtered, the dispersion medium remaining on the surface of the porous membrane is removed and is substd. with a solvent having a low solubility by washing fluid to dissolve the surfaces of the fine particles and to adhere and bond the particles. A good solvent to the fine particles is admitted into the module and is brought into contact with the particles, by which the fine particles are partly or completely dissolved and swollen to bond the fine particles to each other or to form the thin films to close the inside of the pores. The composite membrane is further brought into contact with the soln. is removed to coat the surfaces of the porous membrane which come into contact with the blood with the above-mentioned polymer.
