PURPOSE:The surface-modified seed skin of Plantago ovata, obtained by attaching monosaccharide, disaccharide and sugar alcohol to the surface of the seed skin of Plantago ovata. CONSTITUTION:One or more sugars selected from monosaccharide (e.g. glucose, fructose, xylose, etc.), disaccharide (e.g. maltose, sucrose, etc.) and sugar alcohol (e.g. mannitol, xylitol, etc.) are attached to the surface of the seed skin of Plantago ovata to effect the surface modification of the skin and obtain an easily water-dispersible Plantago ovata seed skin. The amount of the sugar is 0.04-0.08pts.wt. or more, preferably 0.1-0.5pts.wt. per 1pt.wt. of the seed skin. The seed skin can be dispersed uniformly in a small amount of water without forming undissolved lumps, and accordingly, it can be swallowed extremely easily. The seed skin is useful as a laxative, a remedy for haemorrhoid or fever caused by constipation, or as a food.
