PURPOSE:To enable high accurate machining to be performed eliminating dimensional unevenness in the depth direction, by lifting a reference pin of a shank of the reference surface of a clamping device by a clamping lever and clamping the shank in a condition that it is continually pressed to a fixed position so as to set an electrode to a fixed position. CONSTITUTION:If a shank 6 is inserted into a clamping device 4 of an automatic electrode exchanger ATC, a reference pin 7 is lifted by actuating a clamping lever 10. Next the reference pin 7, which is further lifted by opening a hydraulic clamp, is surely set to the reference surface of the clamping device 4. Thereafter, the shank 6 is hydraulically clamped, next the clamping lever 10 is reset to the initial condition, and action is completed. Accordingly, high accurate machining can be performed by enabling an electrode 5 to be continually set to a fixed position and eliminating dimensional unevenness in the depth direction of electric discharge machining because the shank 6 is clamped in a condition that it is always pressed to a fixed position by lifting the reference pin 7 of the shank 6 to the reference surface of the clamping device 4.
