PURPOSE:To obtain the objective compound by mixing an aqueous solution of an aromatic sulfonic acid or its salt to a mixture containing naphthalenes, especially cracked light-oil fraction, to form a complex, stirring the aqueous layer after addition of a volatile organic solvent and evaporating the solvent from an organic solvent layer. CONSTITUTION:Cracked light-oil fraction, etc., containing naphthalenes (e.g. mono- and dimethylnaphthalene or ethylnaphthalene) is mixed with 10-100wt.% aqueous solution of an aromatic sulfonic acid (e.g. benzenesulfonic acid, sulfosalicylic acid, toluenesulfonic acid and their salts) and vigorously stirred at 0-50 deg.C to form a complex. The mixture is left standing and the obtained aqueous solution is mixed with a volatile organic solvent such as n-hexane and vigorously agitated at 30-50 deg.C to decompose the complex and extract the obtained naphthalenes to the organic solvent layer. The solvent is evaporated from the solvent layer to recover concentrated naphthalenes. The concentration of the naphthalenes can be increased by repeating the extraction and separation procedures.
