Apparatus (20) for continuously producing fiber reinforced mold charge blanks for molding processes including, a creel assembly (21) for laying up a plurality of layers of fibrous matting to form a compound sheet of fibrous matting, a fiber feeder mechanism (22) operatively interrelated with the creel assembly for effecting disposition of fibers between the layers of fibrous matting to form a compound sheet of reinforced fibrous matting, a reprocessing system (150) for converting scrap matting to reinforcing fibers, slitting mechanism (23) for cutting the compound sheet into a plurality of strips of a width substantially equal to the cross-sectional extent of the preforms, a creel transfer assembly (24) for selectively effecting transition in the supply of the fibrous matting from one creel to another creel of the creel assembly, cutting mechanism (25) for severing the strips into mold charge blanks of a length substantially equal to the length of the preforms, a take-away conveyor (26) for moving the mold charge blanks from the cutting mechanism, an oven conveyor for transporting the mold charge blanks from the take-away conveyor through to an oven (28) for the controlled heating thereof, and a shuttle assembly (29) for transferring the mold charge blanks from the oven conveyor to a press (30), the press effecting molding of the mold charge blanks.
