The invention relates to a process for preparing epimer free sugar alcohols from the group xylitol, sorbitol (D glucitol), 4-O--D-galactopyranosyl-D-glucitol and 4O- -D-glucopyranosyl-D-sorbitol by means of the catalytic hydrogenation of the corresponding sugar D xylose, -D-glucose, 4-O--galactopyranosyl -D-glucopyranose or 4-O--D-glucopyranosyl -D-glucopyranose in aqueous solution with hydrogen under a pressure of 10,000-50,000 kPa and at a temperature of 60-125 degree C using a solid bed process in one reaction zone and with the hydrogenation catalysts employed being formed bodies which have been produced from pulverulent elements from the eighth group in the periodic system.
