In a process for removing or concentrating heavy metal ions from an aqueous solution, an ethylene copolymer is contacted with the aqueous solution, the copolymer being built up from ethylene, (meth)acrylic acid and a (meth)acrylic ester, it being possible for up to 100% of the carboxylic acid groups of the copolymer to be neutralised with metal ions.
