A process and an installation for combined separation of gas from gas rich oil and storage of the separated phases in mined rock caverns (1) below the ground water level, the separation being effected in the very mined rock cavern (1) being used as storage rock cavern and/or in one or more smaller rock caverns or passages connected thereto and arranged over the highest oil level. An installation for carrying out the process comprises the said rock cavern (1) wherein it in or in connection therewith and over the highest oil level is arranged a separation means (3) for separation of gas from the gas rich oil being supplied (4). The separation means (3) is preferably arranged in the very storage hall, advantageously in its upper entrance tunnel, or in a particularly arranged gallery or a groove means (2) arranged over the highest oil level. A suction compressor unit (9) with auxiliary equipment and tube connection to the rock cavern is arranged outside the rock cavern to maintain the gaseous pressure in the rock cavern at most at the transport stabilization pressure for the oil. The separation unit has advantageously character of contact devices to provide for a large contact area oil/gas in thin layers and sufficient residence time for liberation of gas, the contact device advantageously consisting of stepped thresholds and/or baffle plates. The tube connections for water (7), oil (6) and gas (8) are advantageously passed upwardly from the storage cavern through a shaft (11) which is advantageously sealed by means of a waterfilled concrete plug (12).
