PURPOSE:To measure automatically, continuously and with a high accuracy an item of a geometrical parameter, etc. of a structure of a single mode optical fiber by providing separately a stage for setting in optical fiber to be measured, and a stage for executing a measurement, so that the setting on a carrier can be executed while a measuring instrument is executing a measurement at the time of a work. CONSTITUTION:Holders 24, 26 for holding each end part of an optical fiber to be measured 28,and the first optical fiber bending giving members (large rollers) 30, 32 for giving a bending of a circle one round portion of the first radius of curvature in order to control a propagation mode in the optical fiber 28 are provided on a carrier 10. Also, the second optical fiber bending giving members (small rollers) 36, 38 and 40 are installed. Moreover, a setting stage for setting the optical fiber 28 and a measuring stage are provided on the carrier 10, moved successively to each measuring state together with the carrier 10, and a prescribed characteristic measurement is executed.
