The test device represents a combination for testing the insulating performance of three-phase switching systems and for testing the electrical strength of the insulating gas in switching systems which are in use. A duct (2), which is permanently installed in the encapsulation (9) of a gas-insulated switching system, is penetrated by a test conductor (1), which can move longitudinally and in the rotation direction, on whose inside there is arranged a test electrode 4 which can pivot and has a preferably spherical contact (6). By rotating the test conductor (1), the contact is alternately brought into connection with the conductor pieces (5) of a three-phase switching system. In a further test position, the contact (6) is at a distance (A) from an earthed electrode (7) at which the breakdown strength of the insulating gas can be tested using a suitable test voltage. In a fifth position, the contact (6) touches the earth potential and thus prevents the test electrode remaining charged after a test has been carried out and generating a dangerous contact voltage on the outside of the switching system. The invention contains the further safety measures which ensure in a simple manner that the test electrode (4) is always at earth potential when the switching system is in the normal operating mode.
