The invention provides a recombinant DNA molecule which codes for a polypeptide which has the antigenicity of the allergen P14 of birch (Betula verrucosa) and other plants of the order Fagales, or a peptide which has at least one epitope thereof, and a nucleic acid sequence which hybridizes with such a sequence under stringent conditions. A method is provided with which it is possible to purify the P14 allergen or cross-reactive allergens with the aid of binding to poly(L-proline). Also described are methods for using the P14 allergen or recombinant or synthetic polypeptides of the same antigenicity in the diagnosis or therapy of allergic disorders.
