In a device for automatically controlling the suction power of a vacuum cleaner having a fan, a fan drive motor and an associated control circuit for the latter, it is proposed to provide two underpressure switches, adjusted to different underpressure response thresholds, or an underpressure double switch upstream of the two underpressure response thresholds and to control, via a corresponding logical combination of the circuit states, a memory (counter, capacitor) whose output configurations govern the control of a phase control connected in series with the fan drive motor.
