A thyristor is provided with an ignition signal SP2 for igniting the thyristor at the required time ta after the commencement of the thyristor's block voltage interval. In order to discharge the thyristor's anode transition and thereby make possible safe ignition with low ignition power, the thyristor is given an additional control signal SP1 before the ignition signal with an amplitude and/or time position so selected that the additional control signal does not cause ignition of the thyristor before the ignition signal.
