The invention relates to a method and to an installation for unblocking a lift or goods lift cabin 1 which has accidentally become immobilised between two floors of a shaft 3, the cabin being housed in a support calliper 5 associated with a main control 6. According to the invention, the uprights 13 of the calliper have a long length E corresponding to the height C of the cabin with its external service members plus the distance D separating the two most distant consecutive floors, the cabin being mounted slidingly between the uprights and moved in the calliper by an automatic control 11 which is independent of the main control. The invention can be applied to all lifts and goods lifts in which the shaft includes at least three landing doors.
