FLOW MODIFICATION AT THE BIFURCATION OF A BRANCH CHANNEL FROM A MAINCHANNEL CARRYING A WATER FLOW

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSUREA bifurcated channel comprising a main channel carryinga water flow and a branch channel bifurcating therefromis provided with flow deflecting means adjacent theupstream corner of the bifurcation relative to the waterflow, the deflecting means comprising a wall whichdefines a narrow channel extending around the corner,with its inlet in the main channel and its outlet in thebranch channel, for deflecting a small proportion of thewater flow from the main stream into the branch channelto counteract the effect of the normal flow of waterfrom the main flow into the branch which causes eddying;the small deflected flow opposes the eddy and eitherreduces it or prevents its formation so as to reduce thesedimentation normally caused by such eddies at theentrances to branch channels.
