VENEER LATHES HAVING VENEER THICKNESS SENSOR AND THICKNESS CONTROL

ABSTRACTA wood veneer lathe that includes a sensor carriedby the nose bar and co-acting with the peeling knife to detectand provide an output signal in response to and proportioned todeviations from a predetermined spacing of the nose bar andknife relative to one another. The sensor is locateddownstream from the point of contact of the nose bar with theblock at a position opposite a flat face of the knife andadjacent the latters cutting edge. A particular veneer latheis disclosed that includes electrohydraulic linear actuatorswith feedback control means for adjustably positioning thepeeling knife. Signals from the sensor, detecting deviationsof the peeling knife from its fixed setting, are analyzed by acomputer and the latter controls actuators to make suitableknife position adjustments to control the veneer thickness.
