ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The invention relates to an isomerization catalyst, a hydrocarbon fraction rich in n-paraffins, characterized in that it is the product of a formed oxychlorination of a solid containing at least one metal of the supported Group VIII by an acidic mordenite, said mordenite having a sodium content less than 0.2% by weight, adsorbing molecules of kinetic diameter greater than about 6.6 x 10-10m, having a volume of mesh, V, of the unit cell of 2.73 to 2.78 nm3 and a benzene adsorption capacity of greater than 5% by weight, said oxychlorination being conducted at a temperature of about 200 to 500 ° C using a gas mixture containing oxygen, water and chlorine or at least one chlorinated compound, the chlorine or chlorinated compound employed totaling 0.5 to 10% by weight of chlorine relative to the weight of mordenite. The catalyst may additionally contain a matrix, the amount of mordenite is at least 40% weight of the total mordenite and matrix. The catalyst is used in particular for the hydroisomerization of rich cuts in n-paraffins having 4 to 7 carbon atoms per molecule.
