ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSUREA method for joining stacked thin plates(metal sheets in particular) or plate sections bystamping dies, and an apparatus for performing themethod, in which stacked plate portions are severed bystamping them along a longitudinal portion of theirperipheries and pressed them out of the plane of theplate, and in which subsequently, by means of a counter-pressure die element, the plate portion nearer theplates is enlarged on the cut sides by swaging, yetwithout the plate portion remote from the plates beingenlarged. Further, during the stamping and pressingoperation the counterpressure die element, or theswaging die, remains stationary inside the bottom die 2,but subsequently, during the coining operation thatgenerates higher pressing forces, the yields counter toan elastic supporting force, whereupon the flowingmaterial of the plate piece nearer the plates formsflange portions which grip the plate associated with itfrom behind.
