ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURECrack free, large area joints between metals andceramics, including ceramics such as silicon nitride andsilicon carbide with very low coefficients of thermalexpansion, can be made by tapering the ceramic in thevicinity of the bond terminus of the joint. The degreeof taper required can be predicted by finite elementanalysis of the stresses developed in a hypotheticaljoint. The joint does not require, but can use if de-sired, highly ductile intermediate layers.
