ABSTRACTA method for the pyrometallurgical treatment of environmentallyhazardous steelmill flue dust and sludges to separate and recoverthe volatile heavy metals from the flue dust material and to con-vert the remaining iron into recyclable directly reduced ironpellets, or disposable non-hazardous reoxidized iron pellets, orpig iron or shot and slag. The dust is mixed with solid car-bonaceous reductant and a binder, pelletized, optionally dried,and reduced in an inclined rotary reduction smelter vessel. Thedistilled heavy metals are reoxidized and may be selectivelysegregated to reduce the gangue and lead oxide contamination fromthe reconcentrated zinc oxide dust. The reconcentrated heavymetal oxide dust is recycled by the zinc/lead industry.Docket1200
