ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSUREAn excitation and power control system for a dieselengine-generator unit of a locomotive including a programablelogic controller for processing input signals received froma throttle lever switches module, a load regulator module, awheel slip transductor module and a performance controlmodule, and generates output signals which control an enginespeed governor and a sensor module. The load regulator moduleis controlled by the engine speed governor according to a setthrottle lever position and generating a signal representativeof a required power output and the performance control moduleprocesses a feedback current and voltage signals from a maingenerator, representative of a measured power output signal.The sensor module controls the excitation current of said maingenerator, and a wheel slip transductor module is provided fordetecting wheel slip condition, wherein the excitation currentto said main generator is a function of difference between therequired power output signal and the measured power outputsignal. A traction motor is located on a locomotive axle.
