METHOD OF ADAPTING A PUMP HAVING MULTIPLE CO-PLANAR RECIPROCATING PISTONS DISPOSED IN CYLINDERS RADIALLY SPACED AROUND A CENTRAL SHAFT

A method of adapting a pump having multiple co-planar reciprocating pistons disposed in cylinders radially spaced around a central shaft having a cam and operating linkages between the cam and each of the radially disposed pistons, to discharge liquids at pressures exceeding 20,000 pounds per square inch. The method consists of the step of providing a cam having three distinct contour sections. A first section is shaped so as to cause the piston to compress the fluid in its cylinder to a pre-selected discharge pressure thereby permitting the piston to begin discharge of fluid simultaneously with the completion of the discharge stroke of the radially adjacent piston. A second section is shaped so as to provide a constant piston velocity during the discharge stroke. A third section is shaped so as to provide for ingress of fluids in preparation for the next discharge stroke.
