In the whole-product ultrasonic inspection system proposed, the test-head mount is mounted on a height-adjustable test bench (22), the system further including a test-piece manipulator (46) mounted on the same test bench (22). The axes (66, 26) of the manipulator (46) and the test piece (28) held in the test-head mount (along the line of inspection) are parallel to each other. The system is fitted, between the test bench (22) and either the manipulator (46) or the test-head mount, with a guideway (36) running at right angles to the axis (66) of the manipulator (46) and the axis (26) of the test piece (28) in the test-head mount. The dimensions of the guideway are such that the manipulator (46) can be displaced relative to the test-head mount between a test position in which the axes (66, 26) of the manipulator (46) and the test piece (28) held in the test-head mount coincidence and a servicing position in which the manipulator (46) does not obstruct the passage of test pieces (28) through the test-head mount.
