The present invention relates to a method for the early detection of retinitis in the back of the eye of a patient. More particularly, the invention relates to a method for detecting CMV retinitis in HIV patients through the use of aqueous flare measurements. The method according to the invention relates to a direct diagnostic procedure which is a non-invasive method for the early detection of retinitis, such as CMV retinitis. The detection of an increased flare, i.e. higher protein concentration, in the anterior chamber of the eye can be used as a signal that the patient has a high risk of developing such ocular disorders.
