The invention relates to a process for the chemically oxidative treatment of water containing toxic and/or non-biodegradable or not readily biodegradable substances, wherein - the water is acidified, - iron ions and hydrogen peroxide are added, - the water is neutralised after the oxidation of the substances and - the precipitated iron-containing sludge is separated off. It is the object of the invention to reduce the operating costs of the process and, in particular, to reduce the quantity of the iron- containing sludge and hence of special waste arising. According to the invention, the object is achieved when - the iron-containing sludge is separated off at a pH between 6 and 9 and - suspended in further water to be treated, - the pH in the suspension is simultaneously or afterwards adjusted to 2 to 5 and - hydrogen peroxide is added.
