The invention relates to a method of controlled passivation of the inside walls of a carbon-steel cooling circulation system which is open to the air and/or closed, with an aqueous coolant circulating therein and containing alkali metal bicarbonate and alkaline earth metal bicarbonate, and to the use of this method for determining the passivation state of the metallic contact surfaces, for controlling the corrosion inhibition and for checking the quality of the coolant, especially water.
