Switched reluctance motor control circuit with energy recovery capability

A control circuit for a switched reluctance motor is provided with a connection between a second end (208;210) of each stator winding (A,B) and a first end (202;204) of an associated other winding, thereby to permit the flow of current from a phase winding (A) to an energy storage (216) device following the disconnection of the phase winding (A) from a primary power source. The inductive characteristic resists the immediate cessation of current flow following the opening of an associated switch (SA), that continued current flow passes to a capacitor (C₂), increasing voltage potential at the first end (204) of the other stator winding (B) and assisting the initiation of current flow through that stator winding (B).
