The process for producing an industrial polyacrylonitrile fiber is characterized by polymerizing an acrylonitrile monomer with a propylene carbonate in the presence of a radical initiator at 40-60 deg.C to obtain a swelled polymer of 5-15 dl/g intrinsic viscosity, heat-dissolving the polymer at 150-180 deg.C to obtain a spinning soln., gel-spinning the soln. to a gelled yarn, removing the solvent of the yarn with a dichloro methane, heat-drawing the yarn at 150-170 deg.C, dipping it into a propylene carbonate, and reheat-drawing it at 180-200 deg.C. The fiber has an high tenacity and elasticity, and is used as reinforcing fibers and asbestos institues.
