Alpha-branched 12-40C fatty acids are prepd. by oxidn. of the corresp. alkanols in liq. (pref. aq.) phase, in presence of alkali, with O2 or gases contg. O2, in presence of a Pd catalyst and Pb (II) cpds. as activator, followed by liberation of the acids from the alkali salts in the usual way. Pref. the alkanols have formula R-CH2CH2-CHR-CH2OH. R = 4-18C alkyl. The catalyst is a supported Pd catalyst, esp. contg. 0.1-20 wt. % of Pd, and partic. a Pd/active C catalyst; the amt. is 0.01020 g (0.1-10g) Pd, w.r.t. 1 mol. of alkanol.
