The outside edge of the housing (F) of the rear-view mirror (S) carries a qualitative indicator (I) under an approximately vertical column of contiguous LEDs (L). The indicator (I) gives warning of a rearward hazard such as an overtaking vehicle, whose relative speed is signalled by the number of diodees (L) illuminated. Alternatively, this number signifies either the distance or the relative spatial positon of the hazard. The brightness may be adjusted to ambient illumination. ADVANTAGE - Relevant information form monitored environment is conveyed easily to driver, esp. when required for manoeuvring.
